Live Below the Line

I’ve decided to join the global challenge to ‘live below the line’ from 28 April to 2 May in an attempt to raise money to help people help themselves out of poverty. The challenge is to eat and drink for just £1 per day for 5 days. £1 per day is the baseline the World Bank uses to define extreme poverty with an estimated 1.2bn people living below this line. The chef in me has enjoyed the challenge of figuring out what to eat. Below is my shopping list, menu and photo of my food for the week… the other 11 pence is for a few spices + oil from the cupboard/garden.

London Marathon

Always impressed with the number of people who run, in particular those who don’t seem like natural runners and those who are behind the end marker by the time they reach us, at about 5.5 miles – never really sure what words of support will help, just impressed they’re trying and as a marathon is not something I feel like trying, the least I can do is stand and clap.

It’s a very different watching experience in maze hill to when we lived near st Katherine’s docks, where at 22 miles there’s a lot of stragglers and we tended to support them while eating a pizza and drinking…  In hindsight, maybe not so supportive!

This year the costume highlights were the Jamaican bob sleigh team and a marching band, though I guess technically the band wasn’t a costume. Thankfully no Borat mankinis…or at least none that I saw.
