We haven’t quite completed the loop yet but we have just seen the northern lights! Updated with evidence as we have now completed the loop and are back home to a lovely repainted and repaired house!
After a weekend in rainy Reykjavik surviving the Golden Circle despite the storm, we started around the ring road heading south.
At first the rain continued, and visibility was limited to 50m, but we made the most of it, dashing out to see the stunning waterfalls, where the green moss/grass stood out amongst the greys, and watch a movie about the impact of Eyjafjallajokull’s eruption on a local farmer. By the time we reached Jokulsarlon it had started to clear so we were able to see across the iceberg lagoon to glimpse the glaciers.
Next day we headed to Seydisfjordur, enjoying the fjords stunning scenery, before taking a walk up alongside one of the many waterfalls cascading into the fjord.
Heading north, we encountered endless plains (but no reindeer), before heading to more thundering waterfalls and the geothermal area near Lake Myvatn.
Today, after a quick stop in Husavik to go whale watching ( 2 minkes), we are now napping in glorious sunshine in our hotel in Akureyi, before taking a walk around town.
Lots of photos to come, but this is from our room on Lake Myvatn.
